‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s road from rehabilitation to goals with Athletic

Whenhe initial occasion the Spanish forward competed in English soil, an 18-year-old representing the youth squad against German opponents at Wycombe’s stadium in September 2015, he found the net. On his next visit he took the field in the country, against the Black Cats two months later, he converted. The third time, against the Citizens not long later, indeed, he scored again. When he returned to Manchester to face United at the sports complex in 2017, he did it once more. An excellent finish, as well. “In fact,” he remarks, “it’s a top-class goal in my career.” So Athletic did what they had to do: he was replaced.

“I got well angry,” the Athletic striker admits, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I was pretty good. I wasn’t allowed to feature the final 45 minutes: I hadn’t yet signed deal, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, standard transfer gossip. It’s unclear the validity, but had they contacted me, I would have wanted to stay at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the facility, the city, the morning session is about to start; following that, the quick travel to Loiu and a further journey to Britain, this time to take on the Magpies in the UCL on midweek. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. This is proving a tough year for the team, partly because of the requirements of their participation. Beaten in added time in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. But, look at the overall situation, the major occasions he’s experienced and upcoming events, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation about him.

In the three years since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates the showpiece event by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway flanked by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the club’s first trophy in a long wait. Currently he stands as the club’s leading marksman in the UCL, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.

The player believed it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and he was right. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player his father and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that developed Mikel Arteta, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at his teens but after making his senior debut in August 2018, he went through a serious knee problem, dropped, a drop in category and a recall before he could finally secure an opportunity, returning at 26 to enjoy the highlights of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Joining the setup doubting you’ll make the top level but each step you go through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You make it and … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in half a dozen appearances between his first game and that period. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games with them and my knee gave way.

“A severe disappointment but I reflect on it as something positive because it made me change the outlook. The rehabilitation process is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then go home, typical youth behavior. At Lezama, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, address that. If your ankles are a 10, make it a 12 or a 14. Every small aspect: perform them.

“At the top level you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. So what happens, happens. Current photos and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”

Minutes are crucial. Guruzeta departed in tears in 2020, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in 2020-21, he scored three times in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the goals started to flow. “Players go through it: temporary moves, ended deals. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and when eventually a vacancy arises in your position, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. All the more so after the prior campaign which, sometimes, was focused on persistence. Previously the main threat with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
