Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen others were hurt in an apparently premeditated blast caused by gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The blast was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house near the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.

All three victims who died belonged to the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were arrested at the site and another man who escaped after the blast was apprehended soon after. All three have been transported to medical facility.

The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the location showed the building left as a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the residence was facing an removal notice due to debts accrued by the siblings.

Negotiators had been sent to talk with the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the siblings triggered the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Claudio Papagno stated to the media.

A propane tank had been activated, and the blast immediately struck our members,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The official was convinced the detonation had happened on a story above the doorway and told journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the explosion, he mentioned officers had “heard a whistle, probably the propane tanks being opened”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents informed Italian media, mentioning that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in honoring the trio of personnel who had died in the service of their country.
