James did not participate in exhibition games and was out for the losses against the Golden State and the Phoenix Suns recently as a result of the nerve issue.
The veteran will likely miss for each of the five of the Lakers' games in October, including the season-opener against Golden State Warriors.
The star, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, has never previously missed the opening of the season in his two-decade-plus career.
His tally of over 1,500 games played is just 50 short than overtaking former Celtics star Parish's NBA record.
The four-time NBA champion appeared in 70 out of the team's 82 games last term and competed in 71 games in the year before.
