Senegal's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

When I enter the room, Lamine Camara grabs a football he won’t let go of until after our chat. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and raw talent won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure was not a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his path in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

However, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back home,” he recalled.

A Landmark Season and Continental Breakthrough

That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, having been sent off early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. He is often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior top prize down the line.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
