The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
