Thomas Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Passion Provided England's Star Sets Aside His Ego Outside.
A single omission did the trick. Another and it might have appeared vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is extremely shrewd not to understand that securing World Cup glory will likely need help from the talented midfielder, even if it is also on the midfielder to fit into the strategic frameworks and team pecking order required with the national team now that he is back in the manager's supportive environment.
The manager desires Bellingham's edge, his fire, but it is a matter of using it constructively. Individual quality counts but the squad know from bitter experience that there is a price to pay when stardom prevails. Nevertheless, a point has been made.
The midfielder had much to ponder after his omission of last month’s squad. He observed England book their place at the tournament without him. He watched the young talent excel as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as Tuchel talk about loving the team's dynamism and values. Inevitably, he has reacted in winning fashion, scoring crucial goals for his club versus Barcelona and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; leaving him out again would have left his World Cup hopes in serious doubt.
The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on intimidating opponents instead of his own colleagues. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is no value to creating tension with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has made him realize that representing the national team is a precious, uncertain thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now throw a protective shield around the 22-year-old after proving that he is unafraid to drop big names.
“There is no problem regarding him, and no concern with the character,” Tuchel said. “Bellingham displays that aggression. It takes a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he has. Everyone need to help him and create an environment which he can channel his drive in matches and towards the goals we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham took up much of the focus at the team news conference for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers versus one opponent and Albania. Who else? Indeed, what about another talent? This is a further gifted No 10 requiring support and direction. Foden has been absent for England since spring and has found it hard to perform well recently but the boss was impressed by the player after his performance in the Champions League match versus the German side recently.
The question, however, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be a strong case to pick Cole Palmer once he is fit after a fitness issue. Is selecting five No 10s to the tournament be too many? The previous manager never found the optimal mix at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the same XI, restricting Harry Kane’s style as a result.
It seems unlikely Tuchel doing similar if it disrupts the team harmony. Space exists for one No 10, with fast wide players on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the returning Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for the City star, who has to be central. The coach wants him close to the striker. “It does not make sense to tell Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but no spot exists in your preferred role, could you fill in at left wing? Or the right wing?” he stated. “Phil will play in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I have this vision about him for years. In my view it fits his style the most.”
Tuchel agreed there are occasions when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has such natural delight for the game, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's the position, the setup, it's unclear.
“In my opinion he is additionally so used to representing his club in a certain structure, to have a defined role. Believe he profits greatly from clear instructions. What is my position? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?
The manager discussed one star bursting through for easy finishes and the other scoring strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, James Trafford and the midfielder have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his excellent performances for City at defense. Interest abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at using Foden as a deep-lying striker against Serbia or Albania. Other options, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should Kane be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.
At the same time, it is additionally a moment to get Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It is remarkable that one must look back to the latter assisting the captain to score in a friendly win against the Scots in September 2023 to find the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the pair linked up for a goal. The coach will know that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is missing.
“This is where at some point it falls to the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to be blunt. There is still a feeling of Bellingham having to prove himself. He may not be assured to begin against the upcoming opponents. Tuchel desires Bellingham committed but he will be watching him carefully. Set aside the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful England team into an even better one.
